AEW Battle of the Belts II Review

Matches:

1.TNT Title: Scorpio Sky(c) vs Sammy Guevara **3/4

2.ROH World Title: Jon Gresham(c) vs Dalton Castle ***1/2

3.AEW Women's Title: Thunder Rosa(c) vs Nyla Rose **3/4

Thoughts:

The opener of this special event had enough entertaining athleticism to keep it interesting, but it was also overbooked to hell and basically an attitude era style circus act. The heel turn and title change are certainly things that happened.

Match of the night for me was the midcard contest between Gresham and Dalton. It was a pretty good defense and showcased the brand as well as the performers decently enough. After, Singh, Lethal, and Dutt came out to start some shit but Joe and the faces stood tall to end the after-match angle. This is a good look at one of the central angles coming to the new Ring of Honor soon.

Let me take a moment to say that very few dudes at the 7+ft range that were ever actually great at their jobs. For every Andre and Big Show there's a Yeti. The only active dude in that range right now that I care about is W. Morrissey. He's really grown as a performer, folks. I have no idea if this new guy has a chance at being any good, but I'm certainly willing to see how things go.

My money is on him heading to WWE as soon as he can.

We closed with Thunder Rosa retaining in an okay match against former champ, Nyla Rose. The pacing and layout didn't work as well as I'm sure they had planned and the finish didn't come off very well in my opinion, either. I wanted to like it, but it was just below good territory for me and closed the special installment on an underwhelming note.

I was hopeful that Battle of the Belts II was going to be a fun experience but really only the ROH Championship match did much of anything for me. The rest was skippable, including the post-match stuff that followed the single match I recommended.

Overall Rating: 60/100%
